Reserves Naturals d'Es Vedr├á i Es Vedranell i els Illots de Ponent (Parc de Cala d'Hort)
The fascinating islets in southwestern Ibiza have intrigued human beings from the beginning of time.
The Cala d'Hort, Cap Llentrisca i Sa Talaia Natural Park and the Es Vedr├á, Es Vedranell and Els Illots de Ponent Nature Reserves are situated in the south-west of Ibiza. The protected area includes islets, maritime areas, cliffs, mountain springs, beaches, fields of crops, woods and big massifs. One of the park's fundamental characteristics is it's inthegrationn of the island's highest areas of land, reaching an altitude of 487 metres at Sa Talaia, with other big mountain peaks like Puig Llentrisca of 4196 metres or Picatxo de Migjorn of 382 metres on Es Vedr├á.
The landscape: One of the park's prime features is its highly varied landscape. It's different mountains offer spectacular panoramic views. The silhouette of Es Vedr├á towering over the sea is one of the most emblematic images of the island of Ibiza.
The islets: As well as it's rocky crags, also listed as areas of special protection and included in the park are ten islets: Es Vedr├á, Es Vedranell, S'Escull de Cala d'Hort, Sa Conillera, Bosc, Ses Bledes and S'Espartar. These little islands are of incalculable value, acting as a shelter for sea birds, the native species of lizard and numerous invertebrates.
Vegetation: Of particular interest is the vegetation that grows along the coastline and in the park's forests, torrents and arable fields. The park has many endemic botanical species. It's underwater flora includes big meadows of marine phanerogams among which the Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica.
Fauna: The park contains large colonies of nesting sea birds and birds of prey amongst which we should highlight the Balearic shearwater, Audouin's gull, Elearnor's falcon. Other examples of it's fauna are the Ibiza genet or the Trochoidea snail or lizard. On the seabed of the park's maritime area can see animals as dolphins, grouper or gorgonias.
Heritage: Throughout the entire park you can find items of ethnological value such as wells, farmhouses, charcoal burners. Other buildings are the lighthouses of the islets or the tower known as La Torres des Savinar and the vestiges of Punic-Roman settlement.
